The area of Westover prior to incorporation was covered by the Westover Volunteer Fire Department. The Westover Municipal Fire Department was established in 2007 as a combination department with 6 paid firefighters and 8 volunteer firefighters. Station 291 was staffed with 1 on duty firefighter/paramedic and backfilled with volunteer firefighters to mitigate calls for service within the incorporated city limits. The fire department began in a small rented residential structure until a larger commercial structure became available to rent in 2014. In 2017 a second firefighter/EMT, and a third in 2021, was added to the daily on duty roster to assist with an increased call volume and decrease in volunteer involvement.
In 2020, the volunteer department was disbanded, and the municipal fire department began covering both the incorporated and unincorporated areas of Westover. In the Summer of 2021, the city began renovations at the previous volunteer department station and made this our permanent home for Station 291 in the Spring of 2022.
Currently there are 18 paid firefighters, 3 company officers, and 2 administrative officers for the department. The City of Westover has property within the Pine Mountain Preserve community to add Station 292 in the future as development occurs. Additional land is owned by the city on Highway 55, in the area of Lake Kathryn Drive, if the need for an additional station arises in the future. The initial ISO rating for the area was a class 7/9 which was improved to a class 3/3X in our 2015 grading and maintained in our 2021 grading.
